Jakub Trajter

Jakub Trajter – (b. 1983) is a contemporary Slovakian sculptural artist, born and based in Bratislava, who employs unconventional materials and techniques to explore new understandings of space and three-dimensional forms. His early works focused on precise realizations in marble, granite, bronze, and wood, emphasizing the surface and aura of forms. Later, he transitioned to using metal waste, meticulously reworking materials to give them new shapes. Trajter’s expressive-dramatic sculptures range from stark constructivist assemblies to dynamic baroque-like compositions, utilizing color and natural metal textures to accentuate fire marks and the passage of time. Navigating the space between abstraction and realism, softness and strength, play and intention, traditional techniques and contemporary methods, and the intersection of physical and metaphysical realms, the artist’s sculptures reflect on human existence — merging the material and the spiritual into striking, contemplative forms that invite viewers to reflect on the continuous cycle of chaos and order, and the delicate equilibrium that defines our existence. An essential part of the work is the tension between technical expertise and the random aspects of the process. Deformations are physically predictable, yet always unique — reflecting the characteristics of the material used and the specific details of the technical procedures of welding and hydro-explosion. The interplay between conscious planning and unpredictable deformation brings authenticity and originality to the works. Each deformation is a singular moment when the force of the explosion reshaped the material from within. The process is as important as the final form. Instead of following a precise plan, Trajter enters into a dialogue with the material, examining how abstract mathematical concepts and digital data shape our understanding of reality and allowing himself to be guided by the emerging shapes.
